About Us

The Westport Library went through a journey to become the ‘house of books’ that we know and love today. Thanks to dedicated individuals and community involvement, an abandoned butcher shop was transformed into a small library in 1947, stocked with donated encyclopedias and books. The library grew rapidly and in 1950, it was decided to construct a new building – the old building can now be found at the local airfield. The new building was constructed on the same site in 1982 and opened in 1987. In 1991, Friends of the Library was formed to provide volunteer staffing and fundraising, and it also generated a used bookshop. Today, the Westport Public Library serves as a venue for community programs, a result of 60 years of planning and hard work by dedicated volunteers.

Library Testimonials

{

"I wish to thank Pam for her outstanding service. Ninety-five percent of the books I obtain from the library are inter-library loans. Pam is always very accommodating and works hard to obtain them for me. When our daughters were young, we enjoyed our weekly visits to the back room of the library to read. I have fond memories of this time together."

"The Westport Library is a true gem. When my children were young it was the only game in town for suitable, free, indoor educational and play time. Today as an older couple, we both spend a lot of time on the main floor and also in the wonderful "used book store" found in the basement. Thanks for all you do."
